Stage One

Stage One at MSA provided various opportunities through our Studio Works 1 Course. The projects aim to establish foundational architectural knowledge. Gaining basic skills in research, critical enquiry and communication. Our coursework emphasised analogue methods, producing a series of orthogonal drawings and physical models. This hands-on approach helped to grasp the fundamentals and key principles of architectural drawing.

The Architectural Technology 1 (AT1) a lecture-based course comprised of three parts and introduces basic principles in relation to each respective component. Environmental Design 1 introduced principles relating to thermal comfort, lighting and acoustics. Structural Design 1 introduced the basic design principles used in buildings. Principles of Building 1 provides an overview of the process of construction through exploration of materials.

  • Project 1 : See

An investigation into the elements of architecture.

Offers an initial understanding of ‘Elements’ of architecture and the observation of architecture as the backdrop to life. Introducing different methods of observation and representation through film and drawing.

Part A: Film,
Working with peers exploring the city of Glasgow, to gain an understanding of architectural elements and the surrounding environment.

Part B: Draw,
Exploring architecture through workshops and the medium of drawing, completing an in-depth study of our living space.

  • Project 2 : Make

An investigation into solids, planes & frames (as concepts of model-making).

To explore the basics of model making and discover aspects relating to space, light and atmosphere.

The process of making physical models and translating into a series of drawings led to a better understanding of scale.

Final Outputs
Reflective Journal.
  • Project 3 : Think

A self-directed study, exploring the theme of inclusive environments. Developing within the landscape, creating an intervention of accessiblity. Ultimately creating an outdoor space for use by all.

Final Outputs
Reflective Journal
  • Project 4 : Re-Use

Provides the opportunity to engage with an existing building and to examine the architectural value to develop ideas for adaptation.

Explored through drawings and models, the proposal for the Old Sawmill Building at Pollock Country Park offers spaces of flexibility and consideration for sensory design.

  • Architectural Technology 1

Principles of Building 1 (PoB1)

Working within a group to develop the ‘making’ of the simple two-storey exhibition building. Completing tasks as outlined in the shared brief with SD1.

Exploring both precedent research and the iterative process to develop the proposal for the building envelope.

  • Architectural Technology 1

Structural Design 1 (SD1)

Working within a group to develop the structural grid of the simple two-storey exhibition building.

Exploring both precedent research and the iterative process to develop and communicate the buildings stucture.

  • Architectural Technology 1

Environmental Design 1 (ED1)

An individual assessment of written response for topics relating to thermal comfort, lighting and acoustics.

Responses were supported with sketches and diagrams to enhance our conceptual understanding of the topics.
